John Prine Night

The songbook

Everything you can play, laid out by record. A song is one song no matter how many sleeves it shows up on: claim “Angel from Montgomery” off the 1971 debut and it is yours, so nobody else can take it off Souvenirs.

Find a song

Titles are searchable for every song. Lyrics are indexed for 200 of 278, courtesy of jpshrine.org, so a half-remembered line usually lands. The rest are findable by title.

What counts

Sam and Michael’s house rules. Some of them admit songs no discography will show you, which is why the sections after the records exist.

  1. Any song on any John Prine studio or live album is fair game, including songs he did not write. He recorded few covers and loved the ones he did.
  2. Any song Prine had a hand in writing is fair game even if he never recorded it, including ones where he is uncredited and only folklore attests to it.
  3. Any released Prine RECORDING is fair game wherever it appears: a guest vocal on another artist's album, a film soundtrack, a duet. Rule 1 is about his records; this is about his performances, and whose name is on the spine does not change that he sang it.
